Circle of Life Initiative
The people behind the scenes at Safe Passage Urns are conscious of the carbon emissions we are responsible for with the day to day operations of the company. We understand the importance of using environmentally sustainable business practices to ensure a thriving environment for future generations to inherit. Our Circle of Life Tree Planting Initiative aims at planting a tree in areas affected by deforestation or erosion for every single cremation urn that we sell.
We believe that the restoration of America's forest is a burden that does not solely rest on the shoulders of the government, rather it is the responsibility of every business and more importantly every individual to get involved.
As a whole, the funeral industry is accountable for an unsettling amount of carbon emissions.
These emissions arise from several variables. This list includes the number of materials used annually in the United States.
- 40 million tons of concrete is used to create burial vaults
- 800,000 gallons of formaldehyde-based embalming fluid is buried every year
- 4 million square acres of forest is cut down for wood to make caskets which contains enough trees to sequester 65 million tons of carbon dioxide a year
- 115 tons of steel is used to manufacture caskets annually
This is just a fraction of the many factors contributing to the negative impact the funeral industry has on our planet. By following through with planting a tree for every urn sold, you can help do your part to ensure the preservation of our planet for our children to inherit.
Our goal is to plant 3 million trees in the next ten years. This goal is only achievable with the help of the One Tree Planted Non-Profit Organization. In cooperation with their team of experts, we can effectively plant trees in areas that desperately need tree coverage. The 3 million tree mark that we plan to hit by 2028 would be enough trees to encompass over 4,132 acres of forest. Considering a 25-year-old forest can sequester 12,000 pounds of carbon per acre, we can extrapolate that if we are able to reach our goal of 3 million trees planted, this forest would be able to sequester 50 million pounds of carbon dioxide within 10 years. After 25 years of growth, the trees we have planted will be able to sequester 30,000 pounds of carbon per year which would equate to over 124 million pounds of carbon removed from our atmosphere every single year. The compounding effects of our environmental initiative are our way of helping people give back to mother nature in their end of life transition.
We hope to be more than just a funeral company with this goal. We want to set about for a better world for our children and our children's children.
