And that’s where gold caskets shine. Whether your family has a strict budget or unlimited money, you’ll feel pleased with these gold casket selections.

The Best Gold Caskets To Honor Your Loved One

Many celebrities choose burial in gold caskets. Gold symbolizes wealth, fame, and success, so burial in a gold casket shows the world your riches. However, although most caskets are bronze with gold overlays, these are still expensive burial containers. Fortunately for most of us, lower-cost options with gold-colored accents provide a more affordable gold casket option.

Note: I’ll use the terms casket and coffin interchangeably since they are the same for most people. There are differences, however, which you can read about here.

Batesville – Promethean Solid Bronze With Golden Handles Casket

The Batesville Casket Company creates some of the most exquisite and expensive caskets available. And some very famous individuals choose them for burial. For example, musicians Michael Jackson, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin were each buried in Batesville’s Z94 Promethean Casket.

You won’t find this casket listed on Batesville’s public website, as it is only available through funeral homes. However, several discount casket websites carry the Promethean at prices ranging from $29,999 to $59,500. Now that’s a significant investment!

Even though it looks like solid gold, these caskets are constructed with 48-ounce polished bronze. In addition, the Promethean Casket has 14-karat gold plating on all the hardware.

Each Promethean takes more than a week to construct. About 150 hours go into construction and polishing this gold casket. The polish shines to a mirror finish, and the interior is lined with luxurious velvet.

Are Gold Caskets Made Of Solid Gold?

Gold caskets are not usually made of solid gold! Instead, gold caskets are constructed similarly to Batesville’s Promethean Caskets. They start with a solid bronze casket polished to a mirror finish. Then gold plating is added to the hardware for a luxurious appearance.

What Do Gold Caskets Cost?

The Batesville Promethean Casket uses 14 karat gold hardware plating and, as you read above, costs between $30,000 – $60,000. The price difference likely reflects optional upgrades on the base gold coffin.

Another contender in the high-end casket business is Golden Casket. It offers a 24-karat gilded casket, which the company says takes hundreds of hours of craftsmanship. This beauty starts at $35,000.

If you were to find a manufacturer for a solid gold 14-karat casket, the price would likely cost nearly half a million dollars. The final cost depends on the gold volume required and the selected hardware.

How Heavy Are Gold Caskets?

Gold caskets weigh around 300 pounds before adding the weight of an average adult person. So eight pallbearers might be required instead of the six who usually do the job. An alternative is to roll the casket on a trolley to help with the weight load.

Why Are Caskets So Expensive?

First, it’s important to remember that the amount you have available to spend on a casket does not reflect how much you loved the person. So often, funeral purchases stem from a place of guilt in wanting to “show” our love for the deceased. And frankly, it is okay just to let that go.

There is the idea out there that caskets are so expensive when in reality, you’ll find a wide range of affordable and stylish caskets. In addition, you can customize a lower-cost casket to reflect your loved one’s personality without spending a considerable fortune.

Several factors affect the cost of caskets, however.

  • Construction materials: Cloth-covered pressed plywood caskets are the lowest-cost alternative. And softer woods have a lower price than hardwood caskets. In addition, many steel caskets are very affordable.
  • Branding: Companies like Batesville have name recognition, which adds to their price structure. Online brands like Titan may not be as well known or popular and thus have lower prices.
  • Decorative Hardware: More intricately designed hardware equals more time needed for design and construction. So, for example, these caskets have a higher associated cost than a simple pine box.
  • Sealed Vs. Unsealed: Not all caskets are airtight. The ones with a rubber seal to keep out insects and nature’s elements demand a slightly higher cost than those without it.

Most Expensive Caskets

Gold caskets like Batesville’s Promethean and Golden Casket’s 24-karat option are some of the most expensive caskets in the world. Starting prices around $25,000, each of these caskets can end with a much higher final price.

Both companies offer customization and personalization to each customer’s specific desires. And obviously, each upgrade raises the price of the casket.

Conclusion: Gold Caskets

Whether you have $1,200 or $120,000 to spend on a casket, remember that the casket price does not equal your amount of love. Famous people enjoy splurging on 14-karat gold caskets when money is no object. But for most of us, choosing a lower-cost yet still-elegant casket honors our loved one.

Gold caskets or gold-painted caskets each offer beautiful salutes for a wonderful send-off. However, shared memories of a well-lived life have more bearing on what we remember about a person’s funeral than the color of the casket.
